Following the importation ban placed on Frozen food by the federal government, traders in Lagos, on Thursday, July 23, lamented that they lose an estimated N20 billion yearly.
The President-General of the Ajeromi Frozen Foods Market Association, Afusat Popoola, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Popoola recalled that before the policy restriction on importation, the members used to receive daily more than eight trucks of frozen food items which include chicken, turkey, fish, shrimps, gizzard and prawns, lamenting that businesses of the association are now suffering substantially due to the policy.
She urged the government to provide alternatives to the banned poultry products in view of the inadequacy of local farmers and processors to meet market demand.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of the association at Ijora, Chinyere Egbune, urged government to assist local poultry farmers financially to bridge the demand gap created by the ban. She claimed that the ban caused about 300 per cent increase in the price of the poultry products.
She said:“People prefer to buy imported one because with just N1, 000, one can cook a pot of soup, compared to the local one that costs more than N2, 000. If the government insists that we should eat the local ones, they should subsidise the local production so that it will be cheaper in the market.”
